The Real Cost of Valentine’s Day–No Love for Hotel Markups

It could be the most overpriced –and some might say — overrated special day of the year. Of course, I’m referring to Valentine’s Day.

If you’re in the restaurant,  flower, chocolate or champagne business, it could be your most profitable day of the year. But for the rest of us, it might also be the most expensive day.

Last year, Americans spent $19.6 billion on Valentine’s flowers. But the real profit makers are the more expensive than usual Valentine’s packages at hotels with major markups on rooms that include roses, chocolate and champagne.

And so, what’s the smart move? Have your Valentine’s Day holiday on the 15th or 16th, when the prices drop, and bring your own champagne and chocolate.
