The Essentials

Most Sleep-Deprived States

Here’s an interesting statistic for the next time you travel in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has measured sleep deprivation in America–by individual state–and looked at which state gets less than seven hours of sleep per night. The results might surprise you.

The most sleep-deprived state in the United States is… Hawaii. There, almost half of all adults, 44%, don’t get a sufficient amount of sleep.

Second place goes to Kentucky, where 40% of adults are sleep-deprived. It’s also the state where 39% of adults suffer from high blood pressure.

Then, Maryland is in third place with 39% of its adults being sleep-deprived.

But what’s the state with the highest number of healthy sleepers? It’s South Dakota with 70% of its population sleeping properly.
