The Essentials

Rails-to-Trails

Locations in this article:  Atlanta, GA New York City, NY Philadelphia, PA

Have you ever heard of railways turned into parks? Most of them are now called rails-to-trails.

Folks in New York have embraced the High Line, the out-of-service railroad tracks turned into a park in New York City. It has become a major attraction for both locals and visitors.

In Philadelphia, there’s the Rail Park, which is a quarter mile of what will become three miles of converted railway open for exploration.

And in Atlanta, part of what will be a 33 mile, multi-purpose trail is now open.

To truly get away from the city, consider visiting the walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York, where you can enjoy unique views of the Hudson River from a converted train bridge. If you’re afraid of heights, you might want to pass.
