Travel Tip: How Early Should You Go to the Airport?

We’ve all heard the admonition to get to the airport early. But how early? Is two hours enough?

It all depends on how you’re getting there and what you’re bringing with you.

Are you driving yourself? Add another 30 minutes to find parking and to also wait for a shuttle bus.

Are you checking a bag? Add another 30 minutes. Why? Many airlines have 45 minute cut-off times. That doesn’t mean you’re standing in line 45 minutes before departure. That means your bag has to be checked in 45 minutes before the scheduled departure or the bags are not going anywhere. This also applies for boarding passes.

Having a printed boarding pass ahead of time is always a good idea, but it’s not a guarantee. Always make sure you physically check in for the flight the minute you get to the airport.
