Travel Tip: The Best Cities For People With Disabilities in the United States

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

However, there are cities around the U.S., where every month is disability awareness month. Why? It’s because these cities have been voted the best cities for handicapped residents. WalletHub, a consumer finance website, analyzed 150 of the most populated American cities in terms of appeal to the disabled people.

Each city was evaluated in three categories: health care, economic opportunities and quality of life of its disabled population. The researchers looked at 29 different factors such as parks’ accessibility, number of doctors per capita and employment rate among the disabled population.

According to the findings, Kansas’ Overland Park is the best city for disabled people. It earned its spot because of a good healthcare system and economic well-being of its handicapped residents.

Number two is Grand Rapids in Minnesota. According to the researchers, it has the best health care for handicapped Americans in the country. And this fall, the city even hosts an exhibition dedicated to disabilities in its Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

In the third position is Denver, Colorado. The city even has a brewery called Brewability Lab that only hires workers with special needs.

The ranking also had some surprises.

For example, New York City, which was only in the 25th position, received first place in the “quality of life” category.
