Travel Tip: The World’s Oldest Hotels

Most hotels market themselves by location, by rate or by amenities.

But a number of hotels–with great stories to tell–are simply selling histories. And the older, the better.

In Freiberg, Germany, you can stay in the Zum Roten Bären. It opened in 1311, survived the plague, a few invasions and two World Wars.

Are you looking to recreate your own version of The Crown? The Maids Head Hotel in Norwich, England has been open for 700 years. It dates back to Norman times, and you get to hang out where Queen Catherine of Aragon and Queen Elizabeth I slept.

And what’s the oldest hotel in the world? It’s the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. I’m talking 1,300 years old. And it’s been managed by 52 generations of the same family.
