Travel Tip: The Odds of Dying While Traveling

The next time you’re thinking of buying travel insurance, you might also want to consider the odds of dying on your next trip.

So what are the real chances that something might go really wrong on your next trip? According to the U.S. Department of State, last year, 843 Americans were killed while traveling abroad. That’s out of 64 million U.S. citizens who traveled overseas last year.

But what are your chances of getting killed? It’s .0013%. What about getting robbed? That percentage is slightly higher.

What about the highest likelihood of an incident while traveling? In the U.S., one in almost every five flights is either late or canceled.

If you’re playing the odds, then trip cancellation and interruption insurance– depending upon your actual investment in the flight–how much you paid of course–may be the way to go. And what’s the cost? The average premium is about 8% of the cost of the trip.

So plan, and budget accordingly.
