It’s shaping up to be one of the hottest summers in history, and in some locations around the world, to be one of the hottest summers….ever.

And in places you’d never suspect like Scandinavia and Austria, there are burning temperatures.

In Finland, we’re talking a thermometer in excess of 100 degrees.

London is having a prolonged heatwave.

And what does this mean to travelers? It can often translate into airline delays, because heat often affects airlift. Also, airlines might have to weight restrict their planes, which means actually taking passengers off flights.

It can also affect air turbulence. Flights to and from Europe and Scandinavia these days are enjoying much higher levels and intensities of in-flight turbulence.

And there’s an effect on the ground as well. Overworked air conditioning at hotels malfunction. So plan, and pack accordingly.

In one city, there’s a least one short-term solution. In Vienna, where one subway is without air conditioning, officials handed out 14,000 free sticks of deodorant to passengers. That’s one hot summer of travel.
