Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Chairman of Silversea Cruises, explains what makes a ship an expedition ship. He also talks about how he was convinced to take Silversea to the Russian Far East, and what he did once it was officially a cruise destination. Manfredi then comments on how far tourism exploitation can go before it is no longer beneficial for the destination and respective community.

Felicity Aston, Author and the first woman to ski across Antarctica alone, tells the story of when she went down to the South Pole for the first time and how she decided to ski across the ice-capped continent by herself. She has a Guinness World Record to prove it. Felicity also speaks about why the communication process wasn’t always the safest method if she had to be saved and confesses what her scariest obstacles were. Then, she explains the common misconceptions people have about Antarctica and the routine that helped her get through the grueling trek.

Simon Calder, Senior Travel Editor at The Independent, discusses ultra-long haul flights and the differences between airlines and their in-flight entertainment. Simon then explains the problem traveling through multiple time zones with direct flights and wonders what happened to certificates given to flyers who crossed the Equator.

James Shillinglaw, Travel Editor and Journalist for Insider Travel Report, speaks about a new category that is luxury expedition cruising and how it has revolutionized the cruising industry. He then speaks about the treacherous Northeast passage, Alaska’s booming cruising industry and the more than 900 ports that Silversea stops in.

Lucy Babey, Head of Science and Conservation at ORCA, speaks about the recent death of a pilot whale in Thailand, the 80 plastic bags found inside his stomach and the conservation efforts that need to be made to prevent losing even more marine life to litter. Lucy then expands on the work of ORCA collecting vital information on dolphins and whales, the significance of eco-tourism and the little things that the public can do in their lives that will drastically help the environment. Some people think they need to travel to the other side of the globe to see whales, but Lucy reveals all the species that inhabit the English Channel and how to spot a whale coming up to the surface.

Jacqueline Gifford, Travel Director at Travel and Leisure and Departures, speaks about the tremendous increase in expedition cruising and the reasons as to why it has been taking off. Jacqueline comments on how the world is getting smaller and how people are becoming more well-traveled and living longer lives that in turn allows them to travel well into their golden years. She explains that people are valuing experiences over things, something that she believes came out of the last recession.

Tom Stieghorst, Cruise Editor at Travel Weekly, speaks about Silversea becoming a force in the expedition market and the congestion in shipyards around the world. Tom then comments on Silversea’s itinerary to the Russia Far East, one that gives people something exciting and different to experience, and the great diversity in expeditions including the Amazon and Polar climates.
