Travel Tip: Online Resources for Safe Travel

Everyone wants to be safe when they travel and there’s now some online help.

First the U.S. State Department has something called S.T.E.P., which stands for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. It’s a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to connect with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. And when you register, you get the most recent security and emergency updates about your destination.

It also allows the U.S. Embassy to help your friends and family get in touch with you in case of an emergency.

Then there’s something called Sitata Travel Safe. It sends its users travel alerts covering extreme weather, violent protests, civil disruptions and disease outbreaks.

And TravelSmart was created by Allianz Travel Insurance. It allows its users to locate emergency services and lists medical providers abroad.

Then, there’s my advice. Always bring with you a fully charged phone and a backup battery because when the sites fail, you still might want to have a conversation.
