Easy Ways to Stay Fit While Traveling

When you travel, your exercise routine is generally the first thing to get neglected. If you’re a frequent traveler, that can be a bad thing.  Without getting overly ambitious, there are several fun and easy ways to stay active while traveling.

Even if your hotel doesn’t have a gym on premises, the front desk can be a fantastic resource. It’ll often have coupons and advice for gyms to visit in the area. Don’t be afraid to ask the staff where it exercises. It might be right around the corner. Even if you are in an urban area, ask if there are any fun hikes nearby. There might be a riverfront path around the corner that you’d never find unless you ask. And many hotels now have local (and safe) jogging routes mapped out for you. What better way to see a new location than on a run?

The absolute best way to learn about a new place is to meet some locals. Social events sites like Meetup.com are a great resource for travelers with athletic interests. The $100 kayaking tour at the hotel might be identical to a free weekly event at the YMCA and great exercise too. Do a little research before arrival and you might find a club or two that’s more than happy to take in a savvy traveler. Again, this could be a great question for the front desk.

If you’re stuck in the hotel, consider packing resistance bands or a jump rope in your bag. These take up almost no space, and they can give you a full-body workout anywhere you may end up. And of course, all the old standbys like pushups, jumping jacks, squats, and sit-ups can happen anywhere. All you really need is the will to make it happen.

Getting a workout on the road all starts before take off. Make it a priority by packing sneakers, workout clothes and whatever else you might need to get motivated and sweaty on your next trip.
