Just when you thought cruise ships couldn’t get any bigger…think again.
Welcome Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, which just began sailing. Consider this — its 228,000 tons and has more cabins on board than any other ship afloat — we’re talking about 6,680. Including passengers and crew, it sails with nearly 9,000 people aboard.
The ship is limited in terms of where it can go because not that many ports can accommodate a ship of this size. And forgetting the size of the ports, it’s also because of the infrastructure at these destinations — how many bathrooms, restaurants, waste management, et. all and not to mention, how you move all those people on and off a ship. But that’s not really the point of these mega ships.
They are designed and built — and operated — as mega resort destinations themselves. And in case you think the symphony will be the largest ship ever…think again.
In 2021, Royal Caribbean will debut a ship that is even larger.
