Travel Tip: Comparing the Cost of Taxi Rides in Different Cities

Locations in this article:  Bangkok, Thailand Barcelona, Spain Berlin, Germany London, England Mexico City, Mexico New Delhi, India Tokyo, Japan

While most taxis in the U.S. take credit cards, that’s still not the case overseas.

Since necessity is the mother of invention, welcome to an app called World Taximeter.

If you’re not sure if you have enough money for that taxi ride in London, Mexico City, Berlin, Barcelona, or New Delhi, this app provides a pretty accurate estimation of what the fare will be in cities around the globe.

The price differences can be staggering.

A taxi ride in Bangkok is a fraction of the cost of the same ride in one of the most expensive cities in the world—Zurich.

This comparison also applies to a cab in India and a cab in Tokyo.

The app allows you to not only budget accordingly, but also make strategic decisions about expenses, especially on rides from city airports.

In the case of Zurich and Tokyo, the costs are so expensive that the decision is a no-brainer.

In Zurich, take the bus or train to the city center, and in Tokyo, the bus.

Forewarned is forearmed. It’s better to know before you get in the back seat and then become a victim of taxi sticker shock.
