Travel Tip: Hotels and OTAs Continue to Compete for Your Bookings

The war between major hotel chains and the OTAs (online travel agencies) is escalating.

The big hotels are offering even more perks and incentives to steer you from sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz—and on to the hotels’ own websites.

So what are the hotels doing?

If you book directly with them, mainly will waive that dreadful $25 or $30 a night resort fee.

Other hotels are throwing in free WiFi, water, room upgrades, and even additional frequent stay points towards free rooms.

It’s all about the major hotels trying to avoid commissions to the online agencies.

That could mean as much as 15 percent off the rate of the room—and sometimes even higher.

But as always with these offers, read the fine print as well as the restrictions.

But for the moment, this fight between the major hotels and the OTAs has created a great buyer’s market for those who want to book directly.
