In recent years, health & wellness has been a trend in spas with a move to use all natural ingredients. But how do luxury hotel spas stand out from the rest? Luxe Lodgings contributor Angela Fairhurst found eight unique and interesting treatments in hotel spas around the world.
Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano. With the heat of the volcano, the flowing water of the hot springs, the pure air of the rainforest, and the fertile earth of the Fortuna de San Carlos region, the Grand Spa is not your typical hotel spa. Pre-treatments start in the open-air relaxation area and include fresh juice, teas, soothing cucumbers, cooling cloths, and a dip in the hot spring-fed Hot Tub. Spa treatments are given in secluded palm thatched roof outdoor bungalows surrounded by caña brava, a local wild shrub similar to bamboo. The setting offers complete privacy while listening to the sounds of the hot springs and wildlife. The honey treatment is a massage treatment using a warmed mixture of olives, honey, and orange to soften the skin. Follow the full body massage with a wash in the outdoor shower. It’s a sweet treat of pampering.
The Park Hyatt Aviara, near the beach in Carlsbad, California, has a new standout program called the Wellness Academy. The Academy includes VeraVia, a one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive, luxury fitness retreat designed to create lasting behavior and lifestyle changes. VeraVia gives guests the whole package regardless of the length of stay, removing obstacles guests didn’t even know they had by treating the body, mind, and spirit. Nothing is left out—fitness, stress, behavioral health, and weight loss are addressed, with customized treatments guided by specialists. The retreat comes with follow-up visits included to sustain change. The resort’s Golf Academy includes GEARS, a club fitting and instructional experience utilizing unique motion and technology analysis that undoes those bad habits and gets that swing on the right track. Surfing with the Chef is another great adventure which includes cooking meals with Chef Pierre after the surf lesson. Also, The Tennis Academy under the direction of tennis pro Steve Halverson focuses on an individual’s needs instead of systems, making it a game changer for all ages and levels. Both surfing and tennis come with surprises upon completion. Pick one or all of these programs, a la carte.
