Travel Tip: Unique Hotels With Personality & History
Want to stay in a hotel with some personality—or even history?
How about staying in a former prison?
The luxury Four Seasons Hotel in Istanbul is a former prison.
The over-the-top suites still have history, including the wall carving complaints of former prisoners.
Closer to home, there’s the aptly named Liberty Hotel in Boston.
You won’t find any orange overalls here.
But the hotel was the Charles Street Jail in 1851 and housed individuals such as Malcolm X and a former Boston mayor.
The Dog Bark Inn—yes, that’s its real name—in Cottonwood, Idaho is shaped like a giant beagle and offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience of sleeping inside a giant dog-shaped bed.
Want an underground Flintstone-like experience?
Kokopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast in Farmington, New Mexico allows you to spend the night in a 1700 square foot cave 70 feet below the ground.
Also located in New Mexico is Hotel Parq Central, which is a former mental hospital.
The story is—if you want to believe it—guests actually check in and get to check out.
