If you’re like me, most of the art you find at hotels, especially in guest rooms, is downright awful. It’s just something—anything—the hotel can find to hang on the wall.
Thankfully, a lot of that is changing as a growing number of hotels around the world have become showcases for both well-known and upcoming local artists.
21C Museum Hotels were founded by art collectors and boast a multi-million dollar collection of 21st-century artists.
The Loews Chicago O’Hare Airport Hotel is not just another airport hotel.
It has its own curator and regular exhibits, and rotates and promotes local artists.
In Denver, the ART hotel opened last year. It features contemporary artwork by the likes of Claus Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, Sol DeWitt, and Tracey Emin, to name a few.
Curated by Dianne Vanderlip, formerly of the Denver Art Museum, each floor has its own artistic theme with original artwork.
Heading overseas? Try the Ellerman House in Cape Town.
This South African hotel has beautiful ocean views, but it’s more an amazing art gallery that also has hotel rooms with pieces spanning two centuries.
