Radio Guest List—Irvine, California—July 23, 2016

Locations in this article:  Los Angeles, CA San Diego, CA

irvineThis week’s broadcast of the Peter Greenberg Worldwide Radio Show comes from Irvine, California. The city is nestled in the heart of Orange County, just about 40 miles south of Los Angeles. Irvine is one of the first master planned cities in the United States, built with specific intentions in mind. Some lovingly say that you can’t go five minutes without hitting a park or a pool in Irvine, and it’s almost true. As the city expanded past its original target population of 50,000, it has made concerted efforts to maintain easy access to outdoor spaces. Joining us on the program to talk about the city’s master plan and some of the gems you’ll find is the great grandson of the town’s founder, Jim Irvine Swinden. Then, Los Angeles Times Business Writer Hugo Martin shares his frustration with the TSA and why its system is not working. We are also joined by Chef Yves Fournier of Andrei, a restaurant that is not just focused on quality farm-to-table cuisine, but 100 percent of net profits go toward the Andrei Foundation, which contributes to eye research and blindness support. There’s all of this and more on this week’s broadcast of the Peter Greenberg Worldwide Radio Show in Irvine, California.

Hugo Martin, Business Writer for the Los Angeles Times, discusses how the TSA has no shortage of issues. The largest problems stem from the rising number of travelers, TSA personnel cuts, and the fact that it’s a thankless job. It also does not properly plan for peak hours, and he points out that the TSA should take a lesson from Disney on how to manage lines and crowds.

Jim Irvine Swinden, President of the Irvine Museum, describes the museum’s narrowed focus and discusses having the world’s largest collection of California impressionist art. It may be a small museum, but people come from all over the world the to view this concentrated exhibit.

Patrick Smith, Author of Cockpit Confidential: Everything You Need to Know About Travel, joins the show to talk about current issues with the TSA and what happens to your luggage when you fly internationally.

Tammi Fuller, Founder of Campowerment, talks about the expansion of her women’s empowerment camp and a new partnership with hotels to build fun and inspiring curriculum for guests. She also announces Campowerment will be expanding to offer men’s retreats because the demand has been so high.

Division Fire Chief McKowen explains how there’s much more than fighting fires in the Orange County Fire Department. One of its biggest pushes this year is emphasizing water safety, especially for small children and the elderly.

Mark Woods, Author of Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America’s National Parks, expounds upon his journey across America’s national parks. While we may think of national parks as entities that will always be there, they are in danger of being destroyed if we do not actively preserve them.

Ellen Bell, Author of Irvine: Images of America, explains why Irvine is one of the best cities in the United States to live. For her, the central location and easy driving distance to the beach, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other parts of the country make it ideal. She also talks about the founding of Irvine and how there was a lottery system created to get a house in the city because so many people wanted to move there.

Bob Bibee, Owner of Pedego Bike Rental Store, describes how bike trails were designed into Irvine’s infrastructure. There are 60 miles of bike trails in the city, and people are impressed by the easy access to nature.

Chef Yves Fournier of Andrei elaborates on the restaurant’s “conscious cuisine” and why 100 percent of its net profits go to the Andrei Foundation. They have a commitment to not only provide healthy cuisine that impacts people’s lives, but focus heavily on eye research and blindness support.
