Travel Tip: Just How Dangerous are Selfie Sticks?

SelfieStickHere’s a statistic that might surprise—or perhaps even alarm you.

More people have died this year from selfie sticks than shark attacks.

Only eight people died this year—and that’s a worldwide number—from shark attacks.

But at least 12 people have died while using a selfie stick.

Not only are the sticks annoying, they are proving to be the ultimate distraction in the process of performing narcissistic behavior.

It’s one thing to take a picture of a great view from a cliff.

But taking a picture of yourself with that view behind you means you might have to stand precariously close to the edge of that cliff.

You know what could happen next.

Other selfie deaths were caused by the photographer failing to notice an oncoming train.

So if you continue to define a great travel picture as having to include YOU in it, and you insist on bringing along that selfie stick, please try to avoid balconies, stairs, bodies of water, and of course, train windows or train tracks.
