Travel Tip: Where You Can Be a Park Ranger For a Day

Park_RangerYou’ve heard of bring your kid to work day.

When you’re traveling, you can keep that education going by having them join a ranger for the day.

Coming up on April 19 is National Junior Park Rangers Day. Everywhere from Yosemite to Rocky Mountain National Park, kids can participate in events like ranger walks, meeting search and rescue teams, and clean-up efforts.

At the end of the day, of course, they get to come home with their own ranger badge.

One of my favorite places, Fire Island National Seashore, has ongoing ranger programs for kids. Weekly programs take place all over the island, and in winter, there are monthly wilderness workshops.

Westin Mission Hills has a desert rangers program for children ages 5 through 12. Every Saturday, they can explore desert wildlife around the resort, and then head to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens to learn even more.

Don’t overlook what’s in your own backyard. There are junior ranger programs for kids ages 7 to 12 in more than 70 of California’s parks and in other state parks around the country.
