Voluntourism: Work With Local Communities in France

vfpIf you’re planning a trip to France, consider going beyond the big tourist destinations and exploring local communities. The non-profit organization Volunteers for Peace has multiple opportunities for volunteers, which can give you a closer look into local culture and history, while also meeting others from around the globe. Check out the program below and remember to tune in to Peter Greenberg Worldwide this weekend for more information. Plus, don’t forget to check out our archive for all kinds of voluntourism opportunities.

Volunteers for Peace (VFP) was founded in 1982, and today the non-profit organization has volunteer opportunities in more than 100 countries around the world. Thousands of projects are available through this organization alone, and can range from education and hands-on work to working with traditionally underrepresented groups of people, helping to bring both dignity and resources to those who are socially marginalized.

France was the third-most popular destination for VFP volunteers in 2012, and with roughly 15 current projects throughout the country, there are a multitude of opportunities for individuals interested in voluntourism.

VFP projects include renovations, environmental preservation efforts, working with handicapped individuals, and social work. Some projects attempt to increase community awareness of environmental elements and impacts through the construction of bike paths and observation locations, providing new perspectives and opportunities for communities to observe their beautiful, natural surroundings.

Each avenue provides wonderful opportunities for intercultural exchanges and networking opportunities, and programs can last from two to three weeks to as long as one year.

Registration fees include a $500 expense for participants 18 and up, $650 for those under 18, and the program typically allows participants from the age of 15 and older. For most France-based projects, this is the only fee. Group opportunities are also available.
