Travel Tip: How To Stay Healthy When Traveling

vaccineNo matter where you’re planning to go, there’s always some risk of catching a bug on the road. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy when traveling.

The U.S. and Europe are witnessing the largest outbreaks of measles and mumps in a decade, so make sure your MMR vaccine is up to date.

Whooping cough is another highly contagious disease that’s a problem in the U.S., especially in California.

Before any trip, start with the CDC and the State Department‘s websites for standard guidelines. Health insurance won’t cover some inoculations, but you can find clinics through the CDC or the International Society of Travel Medicine.

Just remember, the CDC lists recommendations, but they’re not necessarily requirements.

Find a doctor who specializes in travel medicine to vet your itinerary. After all, a resort vacation or a business trip is likely to have different requirements than a trek through the jungle.

Plus, make sure you see the doctor at least four to six weeks before your trip so there’s time to start any necessary treatments.
