Philippines Disaster Relief: How to Help Victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon_Haiyan_reliefOn Friday, Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines leaving massive destruction in its wake. Entire coastlines of villages have been devastated, with 10,000 killed by the storm and 600,000 displaced. Now, the main concern is for the survivors. Organizations are working to make sure that those affected receive enough food and water.

Here are just a few ways that you can help those immediately in need.

  • Global Red Cross has launched relief efforts. You can even donate just a the top of your Facebook newsfeed.
  • The World Relief Programme through the United Nations is sending 40 tons to high energy biscuits, setting up emergency communication systems, and allocating $2 million towards disaster response. You can donate $10 instantly by texting the word AID to 27722.
  • Operation USA has been working with the Philippines since 1986. The organization is requesting not only donations, but also bulk quantities of disaster-appropriate supplies such as water purification and medical supplies.
  • Direct Relief  has already sent 1.5 tons of medicine, supplements, and first aid kits to the Philippines. They are accepting monetary donations to directly help typhoon victims on their website.
  • The Salvation Army is accepting $10 donations via text by sending TYPHOON to 80888 or through their website. All monetary donations will be used to help sort and ship donated goods.
  • Unicef is donating shelter and supplies to children affected by the storm. They have already donated 66 tons of emergency supplies, but need more to ensure that they will be able to support the needs on the ground.
  • Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) has organized teams of medical professionals, some of which are already on the ground. Donations will go to providing medical supplies and transportation efforts.
  • World Vision is gathering resources of food, hygiene kits, emergency shelter and protection to assist 1.2 million people.
  • International Medical Corps  has sent medical personnel and sanitation to the Philippines. They are accepting $10 donations via text by sending MED to 80888. Their priority is infection control to help those injured and help prevent sickness for the healthy.
  • The International Rescue Committee has an emergency team in Manila and has launched a $10 million appeal.
  • Save the Children is putting its efforts towards children and families in the region.
  • Catholic Relief Services is accepting donations on its website for supplies.
  • National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) created a relief fund for the victims.
  • Habitat for Humanity is planning on offering shelter repair and shelter repair kits to rebuild damaged homes.
  • The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is collecting donations for the Philippines on their website or by calling 212-687-6200.
  • Mercy Corps is accepting donations on their website to aid moving food and water to the region.
  • ChildFund International is an organization that has been in the Philippines since 1954. The organization is setting of additional child-centered spaces to aid children and their familes.
  • AmeriCares is a global health organization that is sending medical aid and supplies to 20,000 survivors of the typhoon. They are also aiding local Philippine organizations in purchasing supplies.
  • ShelterBox is an organization seeking donations to provide victims of the typhoon with survival kits that include a tent  and other essentials.
  • The Lutheran World Relief is an organization that fights global poverty. They have put out an appeal to raise $2.5 million.
  • Team Rubicon brings together first responders and veterans to support search and rescues, medical triage, and medical relief.
  • Action Against Hunger is an international organization that provides sustainable food and water solutions. It is putting efforts of bringing drinking water and sanitation equipment to the Philippines.
  • OXFAM America aids teams on the ground and reports urgent needs of food, clean water, medicine and shelter.
  • Care delivers food, shelter, and essentials to survivors in the Philippines. Donations can be made on their website or by calling 1-800-521-CARE or 1-404-681-2552.
  • U.N. World Food Programme is urging for donations to their emergency food relief. You can donate online or by texting DONATE to 20222.
  • Handicap International has been working in the Philippines since 1985 and preparing to send relief efforts to Tacloban.
  • United Methodist Committee on Relief is sending food, water and water purification tablets to Tacloban.
  • Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund is a program for Canadians who can donate to any Canadian charity now through December 8th. The Canadian government will match any donation made to registered Canadian charity that is working with the Relief Fund for up to $100,000.

Keep in mind that monetary donations are the best way to support Philippines disaster relief. Although well intentioned, donating goods may result in unnecessary items. Only donate material goods if an organization is explicitly asking for them and follow their guidelines.
