Starting tomorrow, 34.8 million travelers will hit the road for a Memorial Day weekend vacation, according to AAA Memorial Day Travel Forecast. This year the forecast shows that overall holiday travel has decreased by .9 percent, though automobile travel has increased slightly from 31.1 million to 31.2 million, representing approximately 89 percent of all travelers. Air travel has also decreased by 8 percent, down 2.3 million from 2.5 million last year. Overall travel spending has decreased 6 percent to $659 a trip. However, on average those who travel are going farther: the average journey is 690 miles, up from 642 last year.

Gas prices are rising in the Midwest and California, with the nationwide average around $3.66 per gallon. But the high gas prices aren’t keeping travelers at home. According to a survey by TripAdvisor, only 13 percent of travelers will be impacted by high gas prices. The survey also found that 30 percent of those who responded are planning to travel this weekend and 86 percent are planning to travel for leisure trip this summer.
