Travel Tip: Historic Hotels Turning 125

Locations in this article:  San Diego, CA

These days, it’s worth taking a moment and noticing the hotels that have actually withstood the test of time. And this year there are some big anniversaries to celebrate.

The Hotel del Coronado near San Diego is one of those iconic American hotels and it’s celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

This is the kind of resort that families return to year after year, and it’s even been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The hotel has a new book that chronicles its history, but what you really want to do is ask about their walking tours—they’re led by experts from the Coronado Historical Association and they’re packed full of details and stories.

Also celebrating 125 years is the Fairmont Banff Springs in Canada. They’re offering special deals this year, as well as a number of events, like a historic tour of the building, special dinners and golf tournaments.

In historic St. Augustine, Florida, Hotel Ponce de León has also reached the big 125.  It’s now part of Flagler College, but anyone can participate in an ongoing lecture series, historic tours and other events this year.
