Believe it or not, Mormons were the first non-natives to settle down in Las Vegas Valley. They established an adobe fort in 1855 along a creek that flowed through the valley. The United States Bureau of Reclamation later used the fort during the construction of the Hoover Dam. What remains of the fort is now located at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue in downtown Las Vegas. The fort offers historical tours for $1  (12 and under are free).
