If you think performing-arts companies offer only prohibitively expensive engagements, think again. Just look at the wide range of free programs that are available to the public.

Sure, Lincoln Center in New York City is home to some of the most well-respected — and expensive — cultural performances. We’re talking upwards of hundreds of dollars for the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. But every Thursday night, the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center features free performances.

“In the Park with Civic” is a partnership between the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with free educational and interactive performances between February and May.

Ballet Arizona annually presents Ballet Under The Stars where the public is invited to watch productions complete with full staging, lighting, and costumes … all outdoors and entirely free.

And Miami’s New World Symphony has a new home designed Frank Gehry. It includes a 7,000-square-foot outdoor screen, so the public can sit in a park to watch live concerts while the sound is broadcast through outdoor speakers.

Bottom line: Even high-end experiences aren’t necessarily out of reach. You just have to know where to look.
