Travel Tip: Bad Weather Driving

Just because the weather is warming up, that doesn’t mean dangerous driving conditions are behind us. Here’s what you need to know about staying safe on the road.

Spring showers can create their own hazards: rainstorms pull motor oil, grease, and dirt from the road which can make it slick. And, of course, rain decreases visibility.

Don’t overcompensate. Pressing the gas or hitting the brakes can cause your car to skid, making a bad situation worse. Instead, take curves and turns slowly. Steer and brake with a light touch too.

If you start to hydroplane, your instinct may be to push the brakes or turn the wheel. It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes the best move is to take your foot off the gas until the car slows and you can feel the road again.

And try to stay in the middle of the road. You’ll be less likely to drive into puddles or potholes that can send water into your engine or brakes.

Finally, if you find yourself unable to see the car in front of you, don’t try to ride out the storm. Pull over and wait until visibility improves.
