Travel Tip: Adopt a Pet

Attention animal lovers. Even if you weren’t planning on adopting a pet, well, you may just change your mind when you hear about these animals.

There’s a very cool program at the Aspen Animal Shelter that actually lets you “borrow” a dog to spend the day together.
And you know what happens: people fall in love and take the dog home!

Best Friends Animal Society is a no-kill shelter in Utah, where you can spend a night with a dog, cat, or even potbellied pig before bringing it home.

In St. Thomas, if you adopt from the Humane Society, the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort will give you a 30 percent discount and a free ride to the shelter.

Stray dogs in the Turks and Caicos are called potcakes. Check out the Potcake Place to bring a dog to the beach, and if it’s a good fit, you can adopt it.

And in Puerto Rico, The Sato Project and Save the Sato can help you bring home one of these abandoned animals.

Want to help out but aren’t ready to adopt? Most Caribbean shelters need help flying dogs stateside. You can volunteer to be an escort and have the animal fly on  your ticket―at no additional cost to you!
