Kate in Grand Rapids asked “I’m interested in taking a cruise this summer but I have asthma and don’t want to be around smokers. What do you recommend?”

Peter replied, The cruise lines have really cracked down on smoking on the ship. It’s usually restricted to very specific locations like one bar or one deck. Know you’re going to have it in the casino, but it’s not far and wide throughout the ship. Some cruise lines like Celebrity and Crystal even ban smoking outside on the verandas.

A lot of cruise ship passengers do complain that the smoke drifts from the outdoor public areas up to their cabins. Know where you cabin is in relation to the smoking sections ahead of time when booking a cabin. Look at the deck plans. Remember that smoke tends to rise. Everyone wants a balcony, but a balcony means the air vortexes will come in sometimes and put smoke in your cabin.
