Travel Tip: Food Museums

Locations in this article:  Berlin, Germany

Ever wondered about the history of your favorite food…or just wanted to find a place where you can sample a whole lot of it? There are food museums across the states and around the world set up for just that.

The Frietmuseum in Belgium is housed in a medieval building that dates back to 1399. The tour starts with the history of the potato, explores the preparation process, and ends with samples in an ancient cellar.

And how about this for weird? A mustard museum. The National Mustard Museum in Middleton Wisconsin has over 5,300 mustards, including a tasting bar with 450 options. And yes, of course they’re also for sale.

The Currywurst Museum in Berlin has a Spice Chamber featuring–get this–sniffing stations to test your sense of smell.

And who doesn’t associate Japan with ramen? If you can’t get enough, head to the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum, which is practically a food theme park. There’s a gallery with the history of ramen, bowls and cookware from across Japan, and plenty of places to buy the stuff.
