Travel Tip: Experiences For Gem Lovers

Locations in this article:  Amsterdam, Netherlands New York City, NY

diamondYou don’t have to be a millionaire to get a close-up view of precious jewels.

No, I’m not suggesting you lurk around jewelry stores, but you also don’t have to view gems from afar either.

At the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York City, an exhibit called Set in Style showcases pieces from the legendary Parisian jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels.

Talk about up close and personal: Some items are set in magnifying glass bubbles for 360-degree views.

Or ask about public displays at the famous auction houses.

Before holding private auctions, places like Sotheby’s and Christie’s often have public viewings of gems and jewelry.

If nothing else, it’s a great way to drool over jewelry that only a few people can actually afford.

Or just look for an immersive experience at a jewelry museum.

The Diamant Museum in Amsterdam allows guests to meet with diamond specialists to learn the real process, from mining to setting.

And in California, Natural History Museum curators know how tempting it is to touch these gems, so they’ve got actual “touch specimens” of gems and minerals.
