Travel Tip: Dealing With Addiction When Traveling

If you’ve ever dealt with addiction issues, you know that traveling can pose some real concerns.

But that doesn’t mean you have to be limited in your lifestyle—you just have to think creatively.

One approach is to surround yourself with like-minded people. Sober Vacations brings together those in recovery and includes several 12-step meetings a day.

Some trips involve taking over an entire resort, while others are part of a larger cruise or resort.

There are also ways to plan your own trip. Destination spas like Canyon Ranch, Cal-A-Vie, and Deerfield Spa normally don’t serve any alcohol.

The only catch is that there are no alcohol police at the door—so you may encounter guests who have brought their own liquor. â?¨

Outward Bound has long been a resource for those in recovery. The outdoor experience is conducive to a healthier lifestyle, and works toward building self confidence and teamwork.

And then there are tips you can bring on any trip.

Call up the hotel in advance to have your minibar emptied out before you even arrive.

Find meetings in your destination and if you have a sponsor, make sure you’ve got their number on hand and that they know you’re on the road.
