TripAdvisor Names America’s Dirtiest Hotels for 2011

Hotel Sign - TripAdvisor's Dirtiest Hotels ListIt’s back! TripAdvisor’s notorious Dirtiest Hotels list has been released, and this year’s choices have some surprises, as well as the return of some old favorites.

Part of the annual Traveler’s Choice awards, which are drawn from more than 40 million user reviews, America’s Dirtiest Hotels is the category that attracts the most attention every year.

Topping the list for 2011 is the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, with an 87 percent “do not recommend” rating.

Most reviews were left by travelers attending an event who made the mistake of booking lodging with the hotel, only to be greeted by insects, mold, and stained linens.

Making a return to the list at the number four spot, despite a hiatus in 2010, is the Hotel Carter in New York City. This Times Square hotel is a veteran of the list, taking the top prize in 2008, 2009, 2005 and earning the number two spot in 2007 and 2006.

The abysmal conditions at the Carter prompted one reviewer to write, “I would have stayed in a homeless shelter instead of Hotel Carter, at least they change the sheets there.”

Fortunately, unlike the Carter, many former “Dirty Hotels” take steps to clean up their act after receiving the dubious distinction.

Or they might just change their name, like number nine on the list, the Palm Grove Hotel and Suites in Virginia Beach, which took home the number one spot in 2006 and 2007 as the Tropicana Resort Hotel.
