Travel Tip: Fall’s Seasonal Food Adventures

Travel Tip: Fall’s Seasonal Food Adventures

If you think great ingredients stop growing in the fall and winter, think again.

This is the time to get hands-on experiences with some unique seasonal items.

Late fall means mushroom madness in Mendocino County, CA, where there are more than 500 types of edible mushrooms.

There are educational, hands-on experiences throughout November in the county.

For example, Ricochet Ridge Ranch has guided horseback tours to lead guests on mushroom hunts.

The Botanical Gardens, in Fort Bragg has weekly guided walk for mushrooms with a local expert—yes, there is such a thing as a mushroom expert.

January is truffle season in Oregon. And while they’re still not quite there in terms of ongoing activities, the Oregon Truffle Festival is really the place to experience these gourmet treats.

Held in Eugene, Oregon, this is a big, three-day event with hands-on experiences growing, cultivating, preparing, and eating truffles. Even your dog can learn how to become a canine truffle hunter.

And, if foraging in the winter doesn’t do it for you, that’s OK. This is the time of year that regional cooking schools really ramp up classes geared toward the holiday.

More and more of them are relying on ingredients straight from the farmers market … so you know you’re getting that truly local flavor.
