Travel Tip: Planning Family Reunions

A family reunion is a great way to bring everyone together, but if you don’t plan properly, it can also pull you apart. Here are some hints to help you out.

The most important thing is to communicate, but you also don’t want too many cooks in the kitchen. Appoint one or two coordinators to take charge.

Email can work, but also look at trip-planning sites like TripIt.com, which allows you to keep itineraries and activities in one place.

Find out what type of vacation key members of the family want: a luxury hotel? A national park campground? Agree upon a budget ahead of time, and stick to it.

Remember, it’s not about having the top-of-the-line vacation; it’s about bringing the family together.

Find out if anyone has dietary restrictions, and then confirm the nearby dining options.

Cruise ships can be a great solution since they offer a variety of food, but notify the cruise in advance if you keep kosher or have other strict dietary observances.

This might be a no-brainer, but you may have to pick a central location.

Look at cities that serve as airline hubs to maximize flight options.

If it means planning in an area you aren’t familiar with, check with the local Convention and Visitor Bureau as a jumping-off point for hotels, neighborhoods and activities.

Or check out our Group Travel section for more hints.
