Travel Tips: Bike Safety Tips

Common sense will tell you that riding a bicycle in traffic is dangerous stuff if you don’t follow the rules. So whether you’re visiting a small island or a big city this summer, it’s important to know the laws before you hit the road.

The rule of thumb is: bicycles on the road must follow the same laws as automobiles.

This means riding in the same direction as their motorized counterparts, and obeying stop signs and red signal lights.

If you’re crossing a busy intersection or a crosswalk, it’s wise to get off your bike and walk it across instead of riding.

And this one is a no-brainer, but cycling under the influence of alcohol is illegal in most states, and it’s just plain stupid.

Of course, visibility is king on the road, so you need to wear reflective tape and bright colors.

Most states require a white headlight and/or white reflector on the front and a red reflector on the back of the bike, although the rules can vary in how far the light must be visible.

And always wear a helmet when you’re riding a bike, even if your state doesn’t require it.

Be attentive, and know the laws before you take the road, and you’re sure to have a safe summer.
