Locations in this article:  London, England Stockholm, Sweden

In today’s economy, home swapping is becoming a popular— and economical—option for travelers. In fact, there are now so many companies out there, you can probably find one that suits your specific interests.

One site, called LuxeHomeSwap.com, mostly focuses on high-end homes.

We’re talking places like a beach house in Santa Monica, a central London flat, a stylish four-bedroom home in Stockholm, or an alpine chalet.

A year-long membership costs $159, which is about the price of one night in a hotel.

Home Link International has more than 13,000 homes across 72 countries.

The cool thing about this service is it has offices in 22 countries, so you have access to on-ground support.

If you want to donate to a good cause while you travel, check out Roofswap.com.

Membership is $75 a year, and 10 percent of its proceeds go toward Habitat for Humanity.

No matter which site you use, the real negotiating will take place between you and your potential swapper.

Take practical steps to avoid any conflict or misunderstanding.

Does your potential swap partner have Internet connection?

How will you figure out phone bill and utility payments?

Get an agreement clearly outlining restrictions and limitations such as off-limit areas, user of vehicles, and detailed instructions for plant or pet care ahead of time.

And, we can’t stress this part enough, always, always, get everything in writing.
