Finding Great Historic Hotels

Locations in this article:  Atlanta, GA

If you’re someone who likes to learn about history on your travels, there are plenty of sites around the country that have historic significance—and you may be sleeping in one! It’s one thing to pick a hotel based on its star rating or amenities—but a hotel’s history can be an attraction as well.

A great resource is the Historic Hotels of America, which has strict standards on what hotels can be considered “historic.”

We’re talking hotels like the Greenbrier that have hosted presidents and royalty, and the Mission Inn Hotel in California, which houses more than $5 million in antiques and artifacts.

For attractions and sites as well as hotels, check out the National Historic Landmark Program, part of the National Parks Service.

That includes landmark spots like the Boston Public Garden and the Fox Theater in Atlanta—a former Shriners’ mosque with spectacular architecture.

Another helpful resource is the Preservation Directory, which has links to America’s historic inns and bed and breakfasts, history museums, and even downtown districts that are dedicated to preservation and revitalization.

The point is, there are great stories to be found in almost every corner. You just have to know where to look.
