Extended-Stay Visas aka- Long-Stay Visas

Getting ready to make a long trip overseas? Sounds great, but if you’re planning on staying for longer than 90 days, you may have get what’s called a long-stay visa (alternately: an extended-stay visa). Here’s what you need to know…

The first step is to visit the official embassy or consular Web site of your destination country.

You can usually print out an application there, or they can mail you one.

You probably guessed that just about every country will require you to have a valid passport.

But some countries, like the Netherlands, may ask you to provide proof that you can support yourself financially.

And if you’re planning on working while in the country, a work permit may be required.

Australia has a new 12-month visa for American travelers ages 18 to 30, who can now secure temporary jobs Down Under – click here to learn more about the Aussie option.

A number of countries will also ask you to come in for a brief interview.

If you’re planning to study abroad, you’ll most likely need a letter or invitation from the host school.

Wherever you’re going, take care of it before you leave, because you can’t get a long-stay visa once you leave the U.S.

And make sure you give yourself at least a month to handle the application process.
