Agritourism & Farm Stays

Locations in this article:  Chicago, IL Madison, WI

You may have heard of the term agritourism, which has long been popular with budget travelers abroad. But if you’re planning a family getaway, a farm stay can be a great choice right here in the U.S.

Feather Down Farm Days is a British company that recently began working with three farms in the U.S.

Visitors can live on a dairy farm in the Catskills, a vegetable and goat farm in upstate New York, or an organic farm outside of Chicago.

The farm stay isn’t free, with rates from $189 a night.

But besides cabin accommodations, that also includes kid-friendly experiences like picking and cooking produce, horseback riding, woodworking classes, and ropes courses.

Another well-known organization is Worldwide Opportunities at Organic Farms.

With this group, travelers can stay for free in exchange for four to six hours a day of labor.

The U.S. branch includes places like Kenari Farm Roswell in Roswell, Georgia, where guests can help to expand the vegetable and medicinal herb beds on 11 acres of land.

Or, you can visit my alma mater in Madison, WI before traveling to Little Valley Farm.

The farming activities here include gardening, beekeeping, milking cows and harvesting maple syrup.

Guests can stay in the farmhouse or bring their own equipment to camp outside.
