Finding Medical Help Abroad

No one plans to get sick or injured when they’re overseas, but if it happens, you want to be prepared. Fortunately there are resources to help you out.

The International Association for Medical Assistance is a non-profit organization that has a network of clinics and doctors around the world.

Each member is screened and vetted for quality, even in developing countries.

The Association also offers an online trip planner, where you can download health information for your destination country—including vaccines and travel warnings, and a guide to medical services.

Another option is to ask for a referral from the local American embassy. They can notify your family, and provide a list of local resources.

Many travel insurance companies offer access to networks of doctors and even medical evacuation. With some companies, you can ask to see their list of providers before you ever buy the insurance.

But if you buy a policy, read the fine print. Many basic travel insurance policies don’t necessarily include extensive medical benefits.
