Alternatives to Major Wine Regions

Locations in this article:  Barcelona, Spain Madrid, Spain

Sure, you’ve heard of the famous wine regions of the world, but there are plenty of more obscure wine regions where you might get an even better experience.

When people talk about “California Wine Country,” they usually think of Napa or Sonoma.

Did you know that 60% of Napa’s grapes are grown 150 miles south in Monterey County?

There’s a wine trolley to visit these vineyards of Carmel Valley.

And while Bordeaux and Champagne are usually the big names in French wine, check out an area called Languedoc Roussillon.

It actually has three times the number of vineyards as Bordeaux.

Best of all, you won’t see too many Americans here.

And when it comes to Spain, people think about Barcelona or Madrid, but try heading further north in the Basque country and you’ll find something special.

It’s a sparkling white wine called Txakoli.

Best bet to experience this wine is just to go barhopping, eating local tapas served with the wine, which is poured from at least two feet above the glass to maximize the bubbles.
