Eco-Friendly Outdoor Gadgets

Summer’s almost here, and that means camping, hiking and biking. And the good news is that there are now plenty of eco-friendly—and sometimes wacky—travel gear to make sure you leave no trace behind.

Okay, let’s start with a fun one. Biodegradable diapers?

A company called G Diapers makes 100 percent biodegradable, all-natural fiber diapers than you can actually flush.

Hey, it’s a lot better than loading up landfills with plastic diapers.

And when you’re in the great outdoors, throwing away batteries is a definite no-no.

Solar chargers and hand-crank electronics are a great way to skip using them altogether.

Or you can go with landfill-safe batteries like Fuji Enviromax, which are PVC, cadmium and mercury-free. Then there’s the question of soap—for yourself and the dishes.

The old standby is Dr. Bronners all-in-one products, but you can also use Sierra Dawn camp suds, and other biodegradable soaps.

But remember, biodegradable doesn’t mean it can’t harm the water.

Always use soap 200 feet or more away from any water source.

And then there’s the topic that nobody likes to talk about—how to dispose of … you know what.

Sure, you can use standard zip-close bags, but why not use the same product as the U.S. military, National Park Service and National Forest Service?

It’s something called the WAG waste bag, a biodegradable bag that actually turns waste into a gel for easy transportation to the closest trash can.

Hey, you can’t make this stuff up!
