You don’t have to fly all the way to France or Italy to experience culinary tourism. These days you can stay a little closer to home for a food-centric city tour.
In New York City, Foods of New York Tours offers walking and tasting tours of the city.
Each one costs about $65 and covers a specific neighborhood.
So if you’re looking for a taste of Asia, you can join the Tastes of Chinatown tour, which includes a Peking duck lunch, stops at specialty food shops, tea tasting, and a sampling of Chinese pastries.
Chicago Food Planet offers similar tours of the Windy City.
For $40, a three-hour tour of the near North Side will get you Chicago-style pizza, a stop at a deli, samples at a local olive oil shop, and a visit to a gourmet chocolate lounge.
And in New Orleans, French Creole and Cajun food is an integral part of the city’s culture.
You can choose between a tour that samples the all-important seafood gumbo, and, my favorite, pralines.
