Car-Free Destinations

Locations in this article:  Santa Barbara, CA

With sky-high fuel prices, here’s where to travel without having to step on the gas pedal.

Santa Barbara, California, is so dedicated to car-less transportation that you’ll get 20 percent off train travel to and from the city.

If you arrive by Amtrak, you’ll even get two free passes on local buses and electric shuttles to tour the city.

Also, check out Santa Barbara Car Free.org for free walking and bicycling maps and directions to top attractions via public transportation.

Mackinac Island, Michigan actually bans motorized vehicles altogether.

Local transportation is limited to horse-drawn carriage tours, trail riding, and biking and walking tours.

To get there, you can take a ferry from Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas.

And on the east coast is one of my favorite destinations—Fire Island.

Located off of Long Island’s South Shore, you’ll find tiny beach communities where everything you need is accessible by foot or bike.
