Avoiding the Airlines’ Saturday-Night Stay Requirement

Locations in this article:  San Francisco, CA

Remember the dreaded Saturday-night stay requirement? Well, bad news: It’s back. But there are ways around it … just read on, carefully.

The Saturday-night stay requirement means travelers must stay over a Saturday night for a discounted ticket.

This is how airlines charge weekday business travelers exorbitantly high rates.

This requirement disappeared when low-fare carriers entered the market, but now airlines like Continental, Delta and United are bringing it back.

But you can fight it with something called back-to-back ticketing.

Say you have to fly from New York to San Francisco for a Monday through Thursday business trip.

You make that Monday reservation from New York to San Francisco, but book your return for three weeks later.

Then you make another booking for Thursday, this time from San Francisco to New York, returning two weeks later.

Yes, you’re buying two tickets, but those two tickets will probably be cheaper than a non-Saturday-night stay ticket.

If you plan it properly, you get to fly all four segments, skip the Saturday night stay requirement, and collect double the miles!
