Scenic and Historic Byways

If you’re a history buff who loves to travel, why not combine the two and take a drive along America’s historic byways?

You can indulge your interest in American history along New Mexico’s 84-mile Billy the Kid Trail.

This route takes you through the Lincoln National Forest, past the Hubbard Museum of the American West and into town of Lincoln, which was once the home of outlaw Billy the Kid.

In Colorado and Utah, the 480-mile Trail of the Ancients offers a glimpse of life in pre-Colombian America, where you can explore the ruins of hundreds of homes of Native American tribes.

And in Ohio, the 76-mile Amish Country Byway lets you take a break from the world of cell phones and Blackberries and into Amish farming communities where history seems to come alive.

You can visit working farms and mills, sample local cheese, and even stop by a farmers’ produce auction.
