On the Air: Jen Boulden, Ideal Bite

Locations in this article:  New York City, NY San Francisco, CA

UndertheOakIt isn’t easy being green. Or at least, that’s what many people thought before Jen Boulden and Heather Stephenson created their easy, breezy Web site, Ideal Bite. Every weekday, a “green” tip lands in your inbox. Voila.

Follow the idea and, in a small way, these “light green” tips can help save the world. These tips are simple to follow, and subscribers–all 150,000 of them–are a little bit greener today because of it.

Some tips include lessons in travel and eco-tourism. “Tourism makes a huge impact on the earth,” said Boulden, “and doing little things like staying at ‘green’ hotel can make a big difference.”

“Small steps can make a big impact,” she pointed out.

But life wasn’t always so eco-friendly. A few years ago, Boulden was living in New York City doing marketing for large technology companies. Then came 9/11, and she needed to rethink her path–and passion–in life.

Boulden moved to Ireland to work on a horse farm while deciding on her next step–a business degree with a green focus. Next stop, Washington, DC, where she studied eco-tourism and other related topics. Soon after came Montana, where she founded a green-business consulting company, and met her future business partner Heather.

“We both loved the idea of blending business skills and environment,” said Boulden. As a team they were giving out all sorts of eco- tips to their friends and family. Until the light bulb came on.

“We said let’s empty the bank account and give it a whirl,” she said. They chose to send out the tips online, so there would be no waste, paper or publishers. The duo tapped 300 friends and family to read the first tip. The tip was forwarded. And forwarded again.

Now with new local editions of Ideal Bite opening in New York and San Francisco, and a rapidly growing business, they’re glad they did, because now the world is a little bit greener.
