Pittsburgh is one of those cities where locals are obsessed with their home town…but the rest of the country knows nothing about it besides sports teams and defunct steel mills.

But the locals have it right. Thirty years ago, Pittsburgh was on the decline, and officials made a strategic decision to invest in arts and culture. Its central business district is benefiting from more than $7 billion in investment. As a result, this city has undergone an incredible transformation and has become a model for urban revitalization.

Pittsburgh is consistently ranked among the most livable cities in America for its low cost of living, job opportunity and yes, its surprising beauty. The region’s population of 20-34-year-olds has grown by 7 percent over the past five years, and it is expected to grow another 8 percent by 2020.

The city has become an arts and cultural hub, has a ton of diverse, ethnic dining, and plenty of family-friendly activities: Heinz Field and PNC Park, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Science Center, The Andy Warhol Museum, Frick Art & Historical Center. And once the weather warms up, head to the newly completed Great Allegheny Passage, which links Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. via a 335-mile pedestrian-only trail.
